Brown Bag Auction and Pot luck – November

I can barely remember… I believe it was the eve of November 29th in the year 2018 when the Members had been invited to gather to enjoy a pot luck and to bid on some very special gifts at the BROWN BAG Auction! Those 15 or 17 of us (who’s counting?) who appeared roughly at the allocated time, contributed some wonderful food as well as a selection of Brown Bags, some of which turned out to be wrapped in more valuable adornments than the contents deserved (Duct Tape)!

I found the food fantastic and the company even better. I can’t recall all the things I laughed at and who with, but I was worn out at the end of the night! I think Fred won the prize for the highest bid, eventually purchasing a once cherished, 1980’s Chilton Manual for a prize winning ~$25! It will be wonderful as a door stop or for pressing flowers.

We collected 32 lbs of canned goods and donated to them to the local food bank through PHC and the Club raised $128.50.

Thanks again to our gracious Hosts, Wayne and Verenia who welcomed us to their lovely home!

A couple of post Auction comments….

“Hi Steve…Many thanks to Wayne and Verenia for hosting ! The food was outstanding! Rivaled only by the fellowship and camaraderie shared by our members”. - from Randy
“In my words: It’s people that makes the world go round. Food makes us tick. We are so fortunate to have both in abundance sharing lives and stories under Wayne & Verenia’s roof”. -  from Carol

DON’T MISS THE NEXT ONE!

That’s it for this one.
Cheers

Steve

Country Western Dance:

  • Dance was held on Saturday Oct 13
  • Final figures have not been calculated, but profit will be lower than expected due to Advertising costs (Sounder, Posters, Sandwich Board) and low wine and beer sales
  • Set Up and Tear Down was accomplished quickly and easily as we had many volunteers
  • Wine and beer sales were considerably less than at our last dance
  • Steve gave 2 complimentary tickets to North Road Sports; 2 complimentary tickets to Gabriola Automotive as well as 2 to Derrick at the Sounder – North Road Sports and Gabriola Automotive were sales distribution channels
  • Decoration for the dance were terrific:
    • o Randy had access to some hay bales and brought those along
    • o Gordie McDonald set up some corn stalks, milk jugs, 4-H Posters
  • Good attendance, people had fun!
  • Thanks to Flashback Freddie for once again providing great music
  • Thanks to Kimm for the great line dancing lessons
  • Prize Winners:

  • Best dressed cowgirl and cowboy------Ashley & Chris Manning won a bottle of wine each.
  • Door prizes

  • ---Alois rainbow photo....guy in blue shirt whose name I didn’t get & I hope someone will provide it.

Additional Thoughts

  • o Bigger push to have members sell tickets instead of advertising
  • o Would be nice if more Car Club people attended as it would be a social activity for members
  • o Some feedback that people enjoyed the Sock Hop theme a bit more, although people attending the dance loved the C&W theme

Thanks to Club Volunteers for their help at the dance

  • o Dan & Loreen
  • o Lori & Warren
  • o Carol
  • o Wayne & Verenia
  • o Andy
  • o Fred & Carol

Many thanks to Di Atherton for organizing this fine event, with assistance from Jill, Randy, Catherine, Lori and Warren.

10 vehicles and about 25 people took part. Also thanks to our volunteer marshals. These photos are courtesy of Catherine Phillips and Warren Hiebert.

Cars left from the Credit Union parking lot, separated by 3 minutes. Each car was given a set amount of time to reach each checkpoint. If you arrived on time or late you received 2 poker cards, but if you arrived early only 1 card was received.

The first heading was down the ferry hill to turn left onto Easthom,  then left onto Harrison, up the hill to turn left onto Pat Burns. The first checkpoint was at Pat Burns and Stephens. Cars then headed along Stephens to South Road to proceed to the Golf Course for the second checkpoint. The third checkpoint was at Silva Bay, followed by the fourth at Robert's Restaurant. From there we headed back down the ferry hill before turning onto Taylor Bay Road and heading to the fifth checkpoint at the Malaspina Galleries parking area. Finally it was on to our last stop at The Surf Pub.

The Surf had set aside a parking area for us and we headed into the pub for drinks and snacks, camaraderie, and the awarding of Poker Hand prizes for best high and low hands. Everyone else received a prize of some sort. Thanks to the members who organized everything at the Surf.

Wine Tour to 40 Knots Winery in Comox

Saturday June 23, 2018

Many thanks to our Wagon Master Di, with help from Jill, for organizing this fun event. 6 cars and 12 people wound our way through the back roads to Comox. We made 3 stops along the way, a fruit and vegetable farm, a seafood and meat farm store, and the Fanny Bay Pub. 40 Knots Winery reserved a special parking area for our vehicles and then provided a very nice balcony seating area where we sampled various wines while enjoying our "potluck" lunch provided by ourselves. June Club Meeting and BBQ

at the home of Carol & Fred

Thursday June 28, 2018

Many thanks to Carol and Fred for hosting about 25 Club members and providing the burgers and buns. Everyone brought other delicious foods to add to the main fare. The rain mostly held off, slight drizzle only, but imbibing in some spirits kept most warm!

Randy conducted a short meeting, mostly focused on preparations for our August 12th Show 'N Shine. Our next meeting, Thursday July 26th at the Golf Club, 7:00 pm, will have us finalize the car show details, including nailing down all the volunteers needed for that day, so please attend.

Fred was taking renewal fees as July 1st is our Club renewal time and he updated us as to how the renewals are going. So please get your $25.00 renewal fee to our new Membership Chair Warren Hiebert, or pay at Wildrose Garden Centre or Gabriola Automotive.

Randy then introduced our incoming President, Steve Wohlleben and thanked him for stepping forward to the position. Steve said a few humourous words about how Randy has moved the club forward with lots of hard work and time spent on our behalf. He then presented Randy with a bent screwdriver with an inscription about "not screwing up" while being our president. See the photos below.

We asked members to find stuff lying around their shop or home and bring them in a brown bag to donate to the club fundraiser, a brown bag auction. Dennis auctioned the items off and the winner had to open the package for all to see. After all the fun and laughter we raised a couple of hundred bucks for the club. Thanks to Steve for these photos. One member appears in most of the photos, he was a very heavy bidder!!
